Fiddlehead Fern @ SF Ferry Building

Tuesday, March 30th, 2010

Ummmm, LOVES IT!

How fabulous is this!?

The other weekend I was at the Ferry Building in SF, doing my normal troll of all things fabulous. Really, if you haven’t been there – go! It’s pretty much like Mecca for those of us whose God is food. Yes, you will have to go early to avoid the dreaded mom’s with their entourage of strollers – or those coffee lunatics who create a line with as much depth and length comparable to the great wall of China – but beyond that, it’s fabulous.

Once I got my peas from Louie, some flowers from Cypress Farms, and all the cheese I can get my hands on from Cowgirl Creamery, I drifted over to my fav part of the market. You see, vegetables are great and everything but chocolates are better, and they are located inside.  But it was the mushroom stand that had these fiddlehead ferns for sale. They are commonly used for cooking, but I’d love them just to keep in a bowl in my kitchen. Gorgeous.

What do you see?

"Weeds" on the side of Tunitas Creek Road, Spring 2010

I love this shot because there is so much going on in it. I was on my monthly pillage day, where I drive from Montara Mountain down to Pescadero to pillage for anything green that suits my fancy, when I took this picture. I found wild yarrow shoots in abundance and dug up a few of those along the highway. I collected some early blossoming columbine flowers for pressing, and some dandelion root for tea. Oh, and bark. Lots and lots of bark. For what, I’m not sure yet.

Anyway, in this gorgeous patch of weeds I see thistle…. what do you see?

Veggie Appetence

Saturday, March 13th, 2010

I’ve been dying to plant vegetables the past few months. But with the weather just getting nice and my little farm (pic.’s to come!) still a bit too soggy, I’ve held off. I cover cropped fava beans, peas, and alfalfa, as well as spread about a pound of wildflower seed there… but this barely satiated my appetite to truly – VEG!

Soooooo, I decided to build (and when I say “I” I clearly mean Dustin) a little veggie box of my own, just to tide me over.

Ingredients:

4, 2×12′s cut to 6′

4, 2×12′s cut to 4′

4, 4×4′s cut to 27″

Plywood

Douglas Fir (I did not use Redwood or Trex since this will probably go to the farm after the season and I did not want to spend a million dollars. Read: Impulse purchase.)

18 p nails

Tattooed man to do the work.

I love this photograph

I love this photograph.

I took this on a birthday extravaganza trip to Venice, Italy back in March of ’06.

It was fabulous to come across in the cold, cobbled streets of Venice, and is still fabulous to see in a simple picture.  I love the thought of a modest balcony garden. A few pots, scattered. Careless. (more…)

Treasures from Wine Country…

Thursday, March 4th, 2010

You really can’t go wrong with getting anything from Artifact Design & Salvage, out of Sonoma. And I’m really not just saying this to plug anyone – it’s just true. Every time I go shopping for one of my client’s while accidentally getting drunk/wine tasting in Sonoma, to find that perfect something for the garden – this is one of the meccas I travel to.

For instance, where else can you find a bunch of over sized clock/wheel thingies?

I can imagine these installed on a huge fence or to cover a boring retaining wall… nothing growing on them, but maybe a great  hedge line planted on either side?

Now mind you, everything looks a whole lot cooler when you have had a few glasses of wine in you, but either way I suggest going.

This is something you could post on your neighbors fence when they forget to weed! Although I haven’t mowed my lawn since 1942 so who am I kidding.
