Veggie Appetence

I’ve been dying to plant vegetables the past few months. But with the weather just getting nice and my little farm (pic.’s to come!) still a bit too soggy, I’ve held off. I cover cropped fava beans, peas, and alfalfa, as well as spread about a pound of wildflower seed there… but this barely satiated my appetite to truly – VEG!

Soooooo, I decided to build (and when I say “I” I clearly mean Dustin) a little veggie box of my own, just to tide me over.

Ingredients:

4, 2×12’s cut to 6′

4, 2×12’s cut to 4′

4, 4×4’s cut to 27″

Plywood

Douglas Fir (I did not use Redwood or Trex since this will probably go to the farm after the season and I did not want to spend a million dollars. Read: Impulse purchase.)

18 p nails

Tattooed man to do the work.

The end result was a beautiful little box just for me!

A decent planter box to play around with veggies… lovely. ~bangchik

  2. Lovely raised box! We just picked up the lumber for our new boxes last weekend. They will be redwood, but they’re intended to be permanent. We have too much shale-like mud-stone in the veggie garden area to plant in directly. I hope the tattoo is optional, neither one of us that will be constructing the boxes has one :P

Yes, the tattoo is optional but highly recommended.

We are finally starting to see patches of bare ground here in NE PA but are still weeks away from being able to plant even lettuces. Thanks for the early glimpse of spring.

What a fabulous way to start the gardening year! With new beds! I look forward to seeing what you grow.

  6. Stevie says:

wonderful! So what have you planned to grow in the box?

  7. Jenn says:

    I planted:

    broccoli
    cabbage
    carrots
    beans
    tomatoes
    one pumpkin
    arugula
    kale

…. way too much but all for me!

  8. Great garden-in-a-box! I wish I had room for pumpkin or other squash, but making garden space like this might be the perfect solution. Good luck with your new project.

Very pretty! Is the whole thing full of dirt, or is there something else in the bottom?

  10. I’m glad I’m not alone in wanting some serious depth on my raised beds!

Okay, it looks like it does not get any easier that this. We have been wanting a veggie bed in the back garden for awhile. We will have to try it out. Question…so do you fill up the entire box with soil? Matti

  12. Jenn says:

Yes, and those dimensions took one and a half yards of soil exactly. It will settle a bit but pretty perfect. I did a mix of two types of compost, nitro-shavings and top soil…
You can also staple a band of copper around the inside edge if you have snail issues.

  13. Jenn says:

Mostly dirt… a but when ever I do potted plants or veggie boxes, I sometimes will add grass clippings, newspaper, plant debris, etc. Layers never hurt in such a deep planter.

I love it! My hubby “finally” gave in and we built three new raised beds last weekend for my veggie garden. I told him anything less than 6 beds was just my own personal snack patch and that there would be no tomatoes or strawberries for him! I look forward to “seeing” your garden grow this spring and summer!

I want to build some raised beds. Can’t I borrow your apprentice and does it take more than pizza and beer to keep him motivated?

Really like the way your box came out. It looks sturdy and big enough to grow some huge veggies.

  16. Helen says:

This is quite the veggie box. Can’t wait to see it later when it’s packed full of growing veggies. I have a feeling it’ll look really beautiful.

My garage isn’t insulated and my house is kind of small, I wonder if i can rig up some kind of hotbox for something like this, or use a water heater?
