The day started out as any other day, in any other garden, in any other town.
I put my shit kickers on (see below) before work, since I knew I’d be working at a house that has a lawn that looks like shit in desperate need of aerating. The boots are the perfect blend of cuteness/function, as they inevitably sink into the grass. When I walked through my garden, to get to my truck, to get to said shitty lawn – I stopped short, noticing the fabulous Chocolate Cosmos in full bloom. I love Chocolate Cosmos, not just because they grow easily and make for interesting color in the garden – but because they truly smell like chocolate! Any thing that has no calories but gives you the same satisfaction as eating a pint of chocolate gelado – is huge in my book.
Above – previously noted shit kickers.
After work, the day ended on a bit of a somber note. I couldn’t get the thought of chocolate chip cookies out of my head, since smelling those cosmos earlier in the morning – so I thought it prudent to make a batch of cookies. As you can see, I was impatient and didn’t let the butter do it’s buttery-thing properly, so they were ruined. I walked away disillusioned, crest-fallen and a little resentful of the cosmos.
Chocolate cosmos planter BEWARE!

What a gorgeous colored flower! And how awesome that it triggered you to make chocolate chip cookies. That doesn’t look ruined! We would still eat it. I bet it still tastes yummy.
i like this post
NYC – Oh, don’t get me wrong. I ate those cookies…. just deflated from my obvious lack of culinary mastery.
Now I want to eat chocolate chip cookies.
I just happened upon your blog. I really enjoy reading your posts.
I love the chocolate cosmos! This is the first year I haven’t had it in my garden! My plant last year didn’t make it through the winter. I forgot to repurchase. It has such a lovely smell! And it makes a beautiful cut flower!
Laura – We are lucky here to have a few nurseries to carry them in 4″ sizes… I’ll buy a flat of those and plant them like crazy. I’ve never ordered them online but the above link (in the post) should help.
It’s a good thing I’ve never smelled a Chocolate Cosmos
Although after reading this, I have a craving for chocolate chip cookies anyway! Good thing I always keep some bittersweet chocolate cookie dough in the freezer for such emergencies
CVF – Genius!
Well, I just heard of a chocolate cosmos a few weeks ago, and I want one!! Even if I will have the unfortunate desire to make chocolate chip cookies more often… too bad.
Don’t be so hard on yourself about the culinary setback. I consider myself a great baker now — but I had to go through a lot of mistakes and failures (real crushing ones, not edible ones like above) and disappointments along the way to eventually becoming confident of my skill. It’s just part of the process.
Well, I’m not sure which I need most – the cosmos, the cookies, or those super tough looking shit kickers! Great blog.
Meredith: Thanks for the words of encouragement… alas, my baking “process” usually involves some sort of alcohol and a wishful boyfriend in the back ground saying, “Wouldn’t it be great if we had cooookiieessss!??”
Hi Jenn
Don’t know what got my attention the most… the Chocolate Cosmos or the Chocolate cookies… probably the Cosmos.
Gardens in England are in full bloom at the moment but not seen any Choky Cosmos or even smelled any – now that I’ve read this post I’ll probably see lots and lots.
Fantastic blog! I actually love how it is easy on my eyes and also the info are well written. I am wondering how I can be notified whenever a new post has been made. I have subscribed to your rss feed which really should do the trick! Have a nice day!
It’s not your lack of culinary mastery, just simply a tiny shortage of patience! …and the cookies definitely weren’t ruined. Mine was yummy!!
Pretty terrific post. I found your blog and wanted to say your information seems legit. Will keep reading. Thanks. I would appreciate it if you visited my blog at
Like your site! So glad to find you!
I actually find the idea of a gigantic cookie the size of a cookie sheet very appealing! Mmmm.
Nice blog! And thanks for visiting hours the other day.
Appreciate the help…here is a tip my grandpa used to tell people ” The best way to garden is to put on a wide-brimmed straw hat and some old clothes. And with a hoe in one hand and a cold drink in the other, tell somebody else where to dig.”
Just came upon your page and will review other ones. Seems like real good stuff.
Beautiful flower! are they difficult to grow? making me want to grow that now! and all this talk about chocolate is getting me hungry, your cookies don’t look ruined at all, i would for sure eat that, slathered with some ice cream! lol
That cosmos flower is something! Wow.
I’m with Rob, I would have eaten those chocolate chip cookies (or bar) for sure.
