What? Don’t you rub your sunflowers occasionally?

All jokes aside, I love when it’s this time of year and your gorgeous sunflowers go into seed mode. Very cool. The birds are going crazy and use this ‘Titan’ sunflower like a giant buffet!Even if the birds don’t get at these sunflowers, they look really cool left out in the garden to warp and twist in the sun.

Where can you find this giant beauty? Try here.

Everyone else is eating mine! I will have to protect one from the critters so I can do that too. If that doesn’t work, I’ll just watch your video again and live vicariously.

  2. I admit, I don’t usually massage my sunflowers, I’m so mean :P That’s quite an impressive collection of seeds. Poor birds, around here the squirrels seem to abscond with most of them :(

  3. Jenn says:

We don’t have squirrels in these here parts… so the birds are lucky!

  4. Laura says:

That’s a lot of seeds! I love giant sunflowers!

  5. Robur says:

    I always do that.

I like to cut the heads off the sunflowers, so they often produce further flowers. (I was going to use the term deflowering, but decided against it).

I take the heads to the bird table, and rub two heads together, and all the seeds fall off.

    It’s fun and very satisfying.

I looooove sunflowers. I’ve been trying to find neat varieties to grow the last few years, and I love to stick a couple of MAMMOTH ones in there just for kicks. This titan variety looks promising, I’m going to look into that for next year’s garden!

Off topic question (well kind of, it’s still about sunflowers)… I was reading through some of your older posts, which don’t allow comments to be posted anymore, and saw the one where you talk about your Van Gogh sunflower. Can you tell me how tall those grow? They’re very pretty but I’m sort of picky about height (not as interested if they are short and shrimpy).

    Thanks!

Robur – I know right! It’s so satisfying. I love doing tangible things like that … and the sound is really cool – the petal cases falling on the thick leaves sound amazing.

Emily – The Van Gogh sunflower gets pretty tall…. about 5 or 6 feet depending on where you live and where you plant them. You can find them almost anywhere online…

Wow, I’ve never seen a gardener with such a nice manicure! Since everyone else is commenting on the flowers, I thought I’d mention what was REALLY important. : )

Awesome post and must say it got my attention. I was browsing online and saw your site and am glad i found it.

  10. Jenn says:

Ellen – I have never paid for a manicure, it’s such a waste for me. But I love color on my nails since it hides the dirt stains! Gross, but it works.

I tell you that if you’ve grown sunflowers and haven’t given them a good rub you are missing out! Love the matching fingernail polish!

  12. I love sunflowers, such amazing flowers. Not only beautiful but capable of producing so many seeds. Lucky birds.

How come the short silent video of rubbing the sunflower some how seems very sensual?

  14. Jenn says:

Because you actually know me colleen! :)

  15. Racquel says:

I’ve never had any luck with growing them, but that looks like fun. ;)

It remains one of life’s greatest mysteries why and how that works
