This morning was the HMB Pumpkin Weigh off, located (idyllically) down the street from me. The guys and I had a big day of sheet rocking and electrical work to do at the house, but they got ditched around 8:30am by me (what else is new), pretty much running down the street to see the weigh off.
Isn’t this just the type of thing you do on monday morning?
It was the perfect Fall, HMB day for a good old fashioned weigh off. The sun was starting to shine through the fog, the crows were in full force bombing people with walnuts (see last post) and old ladies were in their very best pumpkin sweaters with matching tacky socks. It was awesome. Here are some pic’s:
It was pretty amazing to see them schlep the pumpkins from the trucks to the stage (yes, the pumpkins go on a stage for weighing. There are pumpkin fans and all! I personally am advocating for a spin off show entitled, “Pumpkins & Tiaras”.) with the forklift… all the while the farmer’s looking like their babies had been snatched!
All very pumpkin-y, very Half Moon Bay.

Wow! that is amazing it is a very nice way of spending the morning.
Giant pumpkins are so impressive just this weekend i enter a little “guess how much this pumpkin weight” contest, I guessed 52 kg, I hope I win, although i don’t know the prize because the sign was in Japanese.
Also I have always wanted to see one of those giants carved as a jack o lantern, maybe one day i can grow my own and carve it nice spooky smile.
My jaw dropped when I saw these photos. Oh my goodness, I had no idea that pumpkins could get so big! Truly amazing!
You mention such a great things here and it is always pleasure to read. Hope to hear more and learn from you.
Like the pumpkins but I really wanted to see the pumpkin sweaters and matching tacky socks.
H @ SH: Damn! I’ll try to find a couple pics of that this weekend!
This is really a really great read for me, Have to admit you happen to be first from the best bloggers I ever saw. Thanks for posting this informative article.
Holy sh*$%t! Great photos. HMB needs to have a pumpkin pie backoff next weekend!
Holy Curcubitas Batman, what did they feed those monsters? A Jack-O-Lantern out of one of those giants would ROCK! I can’t wait to show my son…
eeeggaads! zak-rayy-bllew! dude, this rocks. pumpkin sweaters you say though? with matching socks and purse? lol
sheer freshness right there. Straight up.
Woah! What is the secret to oversized pumpkins such as these? Is it the variety of seed they plant or the fertilizer they are fed?
I was wondering how they got the pumpkins off the truck but you showed it. Now I’m wondering how they would get the pumpkins on the truck? Tractor maybe. They are huge! Oh to be able to grow something like that in my garden would be so cool! I love these things and bet you had a great time of it.
Every time I hear Half Moon Bay I think of the one in Kuwait. While there in 1990 it was all the rage to go to Half Moon Bay. I never went but got the t-shirt. Doesn’t really count though. I wonder if it is similar to yours? The one in Kuwait was a resort like place.
ya, the pumpkins are nuts… to get them in the truck they usually grow them on a pallet and then can take them on a forklift once mature. Or they have straps and they lift them up.
yes you can grow one of these in your backyard… as long as you have the room and lots of fertilize and water. they take a lot of care everyday during the growing season… email if you need a source for HMB giant pumpkin seeds.
Those pumpkins are very impressive, especially the first one!
I LOVE giant pumpkins. Have you seen the documentary on giant pumpkin growers on PBS? It is so weird and fun, one day I hope to have space to try to grow one of these guys.
Oh my goodness! Just add wheels to it and Cinderella could ride it to the ball. 0.o
Holy crap! This reminds me of the TLC shows with the morbidly overweight people with their bodies pouring over the sides of their beds. Your idea for a TV show is interesting. I would watch.
Damnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn!!!
Amazing!!! Wish we had something like that here!
