Loving This Shit.

Well the title says it all.
I’ve pretty much gone to second base with Malibu Compost and am loving it!
I met the folks of Malibu Compost at this year’s Green Festival in SF. It was around the time that I was being berated by the hippies in the booth adjacent (for not being vegan and showering everyday.. my bad) where I found a beacon in the fog (or was it a cloud of patchouli?) a whole booth dedicated to compost! Yucking it up with the guys, I learned that their compost is certified biodynamic and their cows receive no genetically modified feed. To be honest, I was sold when I saw the logo… who doesn’t love a surfing cow?

Their poop in their words:
Dairy cow manure endows the earth with powerful fertilizing and healing forces that chicken manure, steer manure, horse manure, and bat guano simply don’t have. Why? Because a dairy cow has an unequaled digestive process which is enhanced by cosmic-life giving forces in her hooves and horns that enable the nitrogen in her manure to re-kindle life within the earth.
Our products are certified biodynamic by Demeter® USA, the American chapter of the world’s only certifier of Biodynamic® farms and products. Demeter’s strict standards ensure crops are grown with the avoidance of chemical pesticides and fertilizers, utilize compost and cover crops, and set aside 10% of the total farm acreage for biodiversity. In order for our product to bear the Demeter logo, it must be made with certified Biodynamic ingredients and meet strict processing standards to ensure the purest possible product. These standards ensure the dairy cows that provide the manure that is the basis for our compost receive no genetically-modified feed and have access to the outdoors. Further, we ensure our farms grow at least one third of their cows’ diet on the property, make efforts to reduce pathogens, and make minimal turns on the compost, thereby enhancing compost fertility.
OH! And they have tea bags! Compost tea is perfect for anywhere in your garden but especially your potted plants and indoor babies. To find more info about compost tea go here.
Needless to say, this is some good shit.

That photo of the couple hugging the cow is so cute. Compost is awesome.
I love how the self-righteous hippies types can get dogged (and rightly so, I say)in the same post where this statement: “enhanced by cosmic-life giving forces in her hooves and horns that enable the nitrogen in her manure to re-kindle life within the earth” is celebrated. Makes me feel like life in wonderfully complicated. And surfing bovines are the shit!
Of course.
The association of horned animals, and horned deities, with the fertility of the land, is well known, at least in Europe:

Meems: I know right? Who doesn’t want to hug a cow everyday?
Phyte: Yep. I find there to be a huge difference between aggressive hippies (or anyone for that matter)and people who just live their lives they way they want. For example – I love Chanel and dairy products and listening to Snoop Dogg – but I also grow almost all my own veggies, talk to crystals and will pull over while driving if I see someone using roundup in order to talk with them about how it’s bad for the environment, and offer them Burnout instead.
Ro: True that. Nice links!
Oh, happy holidays too folks… xo
I like cow manure and tea compost. In our culture, many of us don’t eat beef out of respect for the milk, butter, cheese, toil and good things the cow gives to humans. May you have a blessed Christmas and Happy New Year 2011!
Danged old hippies!
Although is too love the logo, my favorite shit is from a bunny. That stuff rocks!
that’s some good shit!! now i have two reasons to visit malibu–surf and buy some cow poop! thanks!
May: I love bunny crap! Bunny and sheep are the easiest to work with and you don’t feel completely disgusting using it. I can’t believe we are actually talking about this… pretty awesome/gross.
The surfing cow is the best!
Perfect poop from happy (surfing) cows, love it! Happy New Year Jenn!
Great web page! I thoroughly enjoyed your content material …very nicely written.
My hens give me a lot of crap. Bless their little hearts. Rosemary and Carmella rock!
